Josef Špaček — violin

Praised for his remarkable range of colours, his confident and concentrated stage presence, his virtuosity and technical poise as well as the beauty of his tone Josef Špaček has gradually emerged as one of the leading violinists of his generation.

He performs with major orchestras around the world. As well as his solo career, Josef pays equal attention to chamber music and is a regular guest at festivals and concert halls in Europe. He forms the international Zimbalist Trio with cellist Timothee Gavriilidis-Petrin and pianist George Xiaoyuan Fu. With his piano partner Miroslav Sekera they gave dozens of recitals over the past ten years.

Josef Špaček's discography includes most recently an album with the works B. Martinů. The double concerto for violin and piano, performed by Miroslav Sekera and the Czech Radio Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Petr Popelka, is complemented by chamber works - Sonata No. 3 and Five Short Pieces. Other highly appreciated titles include a selection of Czech duos with cellist Tomáš Jamník, Dvořák and Janáček violin concertos and Suk's Fantasia (Czech Philharmonic with Jiří Bělohlávek) or recital recordings of works by Smetana, Janáček and Prokofiev (Miroslav Sekera, piano).

Josef Špaček studied with Itzhak Perlman at The Juilliard School in New York, Ida Kavafian and Jaime Laredo at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, and with Jaroslav Foltýn at the Prague Conservatory. He was laureate of the International Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels, and won top prizes at the Michael Hill International Violin Competition in New Zealand, the Carl Nielsen International Violin Competition in Denmark and the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in New York. He served as concertmaster of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra for nine concert seasons until 2019 and the orchestra named him “Associate Artist” as of January 2016.
